RECYCLING
Recycling provides an example of the collaboration involved in successful and sustainable material management. Households and businesses do their part to separate recyclable materials from their trash. We do our part to collect, sort, and process them into high-quality raw materials for manufacturers to use in new products. We also serve as public advocates for the advancement of materials manufacturing and recovery. Recycling works best when we all play our parts well.

Demonstrating Our Commitment to Sustainable Solutions
Our Triad Recycling & Energy Facility located in Tonawanda, NY earned the distinction of NWRA 2022 Recycling Facility of the Year Honorable Mention. Hosting one of two mattress recycling facilities in the state, and with wind turbines installed on-site, one in 2016, the other in 2017, the location was recognized for its innovative commitment to implementing economically and environmentally sustainable solutions. Each of the turbines produce 180,000 kWh per year and together offset the majority of the location’s electricity usage. In cooperation with the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC), the facility processed 24,728 individual mattresses in for recycling in 2021, illustrating our dedication to an integrated and sustainable approach to materials management.
Strengthening New York’s Communities
In 2022 Casella operations donated more than $275,000 worth of cash, goods, and services in support of its New York customers and communities. This represented roughly 20 percent of the company’s annual community giving for 2022. In November, the Clinton County Landfill and its employees collected and distributed 800 pounds of food, and $1,600 to the Plattsburgh Inter-Faith Food Shelf as part of its annual giving efforts. As Casella continues to grow its focus on community engagement through its community giving and volunteer efforts, programs like this underscore the value that can be shared directly with the communities in which we operate.
Community Impact
As part of an annual training event, Casella Operations and Maintenance team members came together to learn, collaborate, and give back to the communities we serve. In partnership with Odyssey Teams, 80 employees built and donated 16 bicycles as a surprise for local area children from Ballard Elementary School in Gansevoort, New York.
Safe & Responsible Drivers
Casella drivers John Michaud, of Potsdam, NY, and Ron Howard, of Plattsburgh, New York, were recently recognized for being among the best in the industry after being named 2023 Driver of the Year honorable mentions by the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA). Out of nearly 800 applications from member companies representing close to 80,000 routed trucks, Michaud and Howard’s commitment to excellence and safety set them apart. The annual Driver of the Year awards recognize drivers nationwide who put safety first. Award recipients are drivers who operate their trucks in a safe and responsible manner, have outstanding performance records, and whose contributions have enhanced the overall safety and image of the solid waste industry.
