Ken Hier was the first person hired to Casella in 1976 and has been driving ever since. For more than 40 years on the same routes, Ken has been serving many of our commercial customers who remain with us today. Many know him by first name and greet him with a smile when they get the opportunity to see him. It is estimated that during his career Ken has performed over one million successful customer service stops. Ken was recognized by the NWRA as one of its Drivers of the Year in 1996 and Driver of a Lifetime in 2017. He demonstrates the importance of safety and customer service each and every day.

Heavy Equipment Operator
Apprentice: Has 0-2 years of experience operating heavy equipment. Demonstrates the ability to operate one type of yellow iron equipment. Possesses a complete knowledge and understanding of safety protocols and procedures necessary for operating the equipment.
Operator 1: Has 2-4 years of experience operating heavy equipment. Demonstrates the ability to safely operate two types of yellow iron equipment involved in landfill operations. Possesses a strong knowledge and understanding of safety protocols and procedures necessary for operating the equipment.
Operator 2: Has 4-6 years of experience operating heavy equipment. Demonstrates the ability to safely operate three types of yellow iron equipment involved in landfill operations. Possesses an expert level knowledge and understanding of safety protocols and procedures necessary for operating the equipment.
Lead Operator: Has 6+ years of experience operating heavy equipment. Demonstrates the ability to develop training plans and mentor employees to achieve successful outcomes. Demonstrates the capability to operate all types of yellow iron equipment involved in landfill operations. Exhibits an ability to prioritize, delegate, and communicate clearly to the team and managers.

CDL Training Program
At Casella, we offer a paid two-week Driver Apprentice Program and training opportunities for all driver apprentices. When not attending classes, you will be partnered with an experienced driver who will serve as your mentor. Casella’s Certified Driver Training provides professional, on-the-road, and one-on-one training and is continually monitored to ensure your successful completion of the program. This allows apprentices to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to earn their CDL B license and for a successful career with Casella.
